Project Case Study
Before building their new aircraft hangar in Dairy Flat, Auckland, the Flight Hauraki aircraft were based in the hangars in North Shore Airfield.
With over 150 aircraft at the North Shore Airfield there was, and still is a severe shortage of hangar space.
To solve the storage problem the decision was made to build an entirely new hangar north of Auckland in Dairy Flat.
Difficult Site? – No Problem for Macbuilt
The site was not ideal. The land was very difficult to build on, essentially swamp land that was sitting on limestone rock with very little drainage.
Despite the trying conditions, the structural and geotechnical engineers at Macbuilt got stuck into the project, coming up with several innovative solutions to make the best use of the site.
The end result is a light steel construction building with a span on 25 metres and length of 48 metres. The project was delivered within budget in line with the Macbuilt Fixed Price Guarantee and within the agreed time frame.
Getting the Foundations Right
The most difficult challenge with this project was getting the concrete pad down on which the steel building was constructed. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions in October 2009, this made getting the perfect concrete finish a difficult task.
Despite this, the clouds departed for long enough to lay the concrete pad. Once set and hardened, the steel building went up in just 27 days, ahead of schedule to meet the deadlines set for the project.
The Last Hurdle: Getting Council Compliance
Once erected, often the biggest challenge is getting the necessary consents from the local council so the steel building can be signed off. This is important because without this the building cannot be insured and is not in a saleable condition.
Macbuilt are well aware of the council requirements and focus on moving the building through the council compliance process as quickly as possible.
With Macbuilt Construction Director Greg Macdonald’s contacts in the Rodney District Council, this made getting building consent a smooth process. The reputation Macbuilt has earned over it’s 37 large steel construction projects have made getting a sometimes difficult consent process simple and straightforward.
So what are Paul McSherry’s thoughts on the finished project?
“I’m very happy with it. The guys a Parakai Airfield recommended Greg and Macbuilt after he built and excellent hangar with them and I’m happy to recommend Greg and Macbuilt Construction on to others.”
“It’s a good economical design that was well executed.”
